Bringing Designs to Life: A Custom Pin Combining UV and Silk Screen Printing

At Hipins, we believe that every custom pin is more than just a product—it’s a piece of art. In this project spotlight, we’re proud to share how we worked closely with a client to create a one-of-a-kind pin that combines two advanced printing techniques: UV printing and silk screen printing.

The result? A pin with rich colors, crisp detailing, and vibrant texture—made possible through precision engineering, collaborative communication, and decades of pin-making expertise.

The Challenge: Integrating Two Printing Techniques in One Pin

Our client approached us with a clear vision: they wanted a pin that could showcase both vibrant surface graphics and solid color layers without compromising clarity or durability.

To achieve this, we proposed a dual-printing approach:

  • Silk screen printing for applying bold, opaque spot colors with sharp edges.
  • UV printing for detailed gradient shading and photographic elements.

It was a bold design, with layers of texture and visual effects that demanded flawless execution across multiple production stages. And we were ready for the challenge.

Step 1: Precision Mold Making

We began by turning the client’s artwork into a custom metal mold using CNC engraving. The design required precise recesses in some areas and smooth, open surfaces in others—perfect for holding both enamel and printed elements.

After several refinements and simulation checks, we finalized a mold that:

  • Cleanly separated raised and recessed zones
  • Offered a flat top layer for perfect UV ink adhesion
  • Supported clean silk screen color zones without bleed

This stage set the foundation for all further production steps.

Step 2: Pin Forming and Surface Prep

After stamping the base metal into the pin’s shape, we began surface finishing. Each pin underwent:

  • Deburring: to remove sharp edges
  • Polishing: to ensure a smooth, ink-ready surface
  • Cleaning: to eliminate dust, oil, or particles before printing

This step is critical—especially when multiple printing techniques are involved. Even tiny imperfections can interfere with ink adhesion or cause registration issues during print alignment.

Step 3: Color Application and Layer Control

Next came base color filling using enamel. The client had selected a premium matte black as the foundation, which we applied to the recessed areas of the pin. Once cured and polished again, we moved to the most technically demanding stage: printing.

Step 4: Silk Screen Printing for Spot Color Precision

Using our in-house silk screen press, we applied several key color elements using custom-prepared stencils. This method was ideal for:

  • Sharp-edged color blocks
  • Isolated logos and icons
  • Areas that required rich, non-transparent color

Silk screen printing uses thick, durable ink and is ideal for long-lasting color on metal surfaces.

Step 5: UV Printing for High-Resolution Details

To add the final visual impact, we used UV printing to overlay high-resolution graphics, such as:

  • Gradient effects
  • Photo-like textures
  • Fine lines and patterns

UV printing is done directly onto the metal surface using a digitally controlled head. The ink is instantly cured by ultraviolet light, making it extremely resistant to fading and wear.

Our advanced machines allowed for precise alignment with the silk screen elements beneath—ensuring that both print layers worked together in harmony.

Ongoing Client Collaboration: The Key to Success

From day one, we kept the client closely involved through:

  • Digital mockups for each production step
  • Real-time photos of mold testing, enamel filling, and printing
  • Rapid sample iterations whenever the client requested design adjustments

For example, when the client wanted to modify the tone of a specific UV-printed gradient, we sent a side-by-side comparison within 24 hours and implemented changes immediately.

Final Results: A Bold, Brilliant Pin

The final pin was nothing short of striking. The silk screen elements provided bold contrast and structure, while the UV print delivered depth and dimensionality.

The client was thrilled—not just with the result, but with the speed, professionalism, and attention to detail we offered at every stage. They’ve already started working with us on their next pin series.

At Hipins, we’re not just manufacturers—we’re your creative partner. Whether your design calls for traditional techniques or innovative combinations, we’re ready to make it happen.

FAQs: Custom Pins with UV and Silk Screen Printing

Q1: Why combine UV printing and silk screen printing in one pin?
Each technique has its strengths—silk screen is ideal for bold, flat color, while UV printing offers detailed, high-resolution designs. Combining both allows for visually complex and dynamic pins.

Q2: Will the print last over time?
Yes. Both silk screen and UV inks are designed to be highly durable, weather-resistant, and fade-proof. We also apply protective coatings where needed.

Q3: Can you print on enamel or metal surfaces directly?
Absolutely. UV printing can be done over polished metal or hardened enamel. We ensure surface compatibility before starting any job.
