1. Project Background
For this custom project, a client approached us with a unique and symbolic request: to design and manufacture a lapel pin that harmoniously features three distinct flags—the United States, Canada, and the Province of Ontario. This pin was to be worn by delegates, partners, and guests attending a binational event focused on fostering cross-border collaboration between these three regions.
The purpose of this pin extended beyond aesthetics. It was meant to serve as a visual representation of diplomatic respect, shared values, and mutual commitment, especially in the context of trade discussions and governmental engagement.
2. Client Objectives & Design Requirements
The client was clear on several non-negotiable priorities:
- Flag Accuracy: Each flag—especially the Ontario provincial flag, which includes both the Union Jack and the provincial shield—had to be represented precisely, with correct proportions and color fidelity.
- Premium Look: A gold-plated finish was required to reflect formality and provide a professional, elegant appearance.
- Compact Size: The pin needed to remain under 35mm in width for easy placement on suits, uniforms, and dress lapels. The final approved dimensions were 31mm x 10mm.
- Secure Attachment: Since the pins would be worn during both outdoor and indoor events, the client asked for a dual-post butterfly clutch backing to prevent the pin from rotating or tilting when worn.
- Vivid Coloring: Colors had to be true to official flag standards using Pantone Matching System (PMS) references.
3. Crafting Technique: Soft Enamel with UV Print Enhancement
Based on the technical constraints and desired visual outcome, we recommended using a soft enamel base paired with UV printing for detail enhancement. This hybrid technique provided the best of both worlds:
- Soft enamel created a textured, tactile feel that gave the pin a sense of depth, separating each flag visually with clean gold borders.
- UV printing allowed us to reproduce the intricate details in Ontario’s flag, which includes fine elements like the red field, green shield, gold cross, and Union Jack.
According to internal best practices, soft enamel is ideal when the goal is vivid, recessed color areas and a metal-accented finish, while UV print is invaluable for small text or graphics that are too fine for enamel fill.
4. Production Workflow
The production process involved several meticulous steps to ensure precision and durability:
A. Proofing and Design Approval
Our design team created a vector-based artwork file, indicating:
- Flag positions and separation lines
- Pantone color swatches (e.g., PMS 186 for Canada’s red, PMS 280 for the USA blue field, and PMS 356 for the Ontario green)
- Placement of UV print zones
- Gold-plated areas
The proof was shared with the client for visual confirmation and technical sign-off.
B. Die Molding & Cutting
A custom steel mold was carved using CNC machining, shaping both the pin’s outer contour and the recessed flag areas. A separate cutter die was developed for precision trimming.
C. Metal Stamping & Polishing
The base pins were die struck from thick iron and then polished to remove any micro-burrs before plating.
Each piece underwent electroplating in a high-gloss gold finish, lending the pin a luxurious sheen suitable for formal events.
E. Enamel Fill
Our color technicians filled recessed areas with enamel using the approved Pantone references. The enamel was heat-cured at 160°C to harden and secure color permanence.
Once the enamel layer was set, we applied UV ink printing for high-definition flag emblems. This was critical for replicating the details on Ontario’s flag, where tiny emblems are not suitable for hand-enameling.
G. Attachment & Quality Control
Two butterfly clutch posts were welded to the back. Each pin underwent visual inspection to ensure:
- Accurate alignment of all flag designs
- No air bubbles in enamel or UV layers
- Secure post welding
- Smooth gold edges
5. Client Feedback
The completed order was shipped within 18 business days and was met with high praise. Our client commented:
“We were thrilled with the final pins. They struck the perfect balance between elegance and practicality. Even the smallest details on Ontario’s flag were preserved clearly. Everyone at the event wore them with pride.”
The client particularly appreciated the dual-post design, which kept the pin securely positioned during outdoor speeches and formal photos.
6. Aftercare and Logistics
- Packaging: Each unit was individually polybagged for safe transport and easy distribution at the venue.
- Reorder Ready: Molds and digital files are safely archived for future production runs. If reordering 5,000+ units, mold fees are waived, per our production policy.
- Care Tips Provided: Clients were advised to avoid direct abrasion or contact with alcohol-based cleaners to maintain UV print clarity.
7. Conclusion
This project demonstrates our capability to transform a complex request—featuring multiple flags, detailed emblems, and diplomatic intent—into a finished product that is refined, durable, and production-friendly. Our hybrid enamel and UV printing method proved crucial in bridging traditional craftsmanship with modern accuracy.
This case exemplifies how a lapel pin can carry weight far beyond its size. When made well, it becomes a symbol of shared values, professionalism, and pride—exactly what this USA–Canada–Ontario pin was designed to represent.
