Overview
For this uniquely layered enamel pin project, we collaborated with a passionate designer and collector to bring their imaginative vision to life. The goal was to create a large, high-detail hard enamel pin that visually represented the balance of elemental forces—fire and water—set against a geometric city skyline and arched by a vivid rainbow. The result is a striking pin-on-pin piece with three separate layers, each contributing a dynamic component to the overall design.
The client aimed to produce a limited run of 30+ pieces, making this a highly collectible item with attention to every detail—from the gradient rainbow to the dual character expressions.
Client Requirements
At the outset, our client emphasized several critical aspects for this design:
- Multi-layer pin-on-pin structure for a sense of depth and dimension.
- Hard enamel surface for a high-gloss, glass-like finish.
- Vivid colorwork, including gradient effects on the rainbow and accurate Pantone matching.
- Raised black nickel plating to create clean, high-contrast borders.
- Customized backstamp, denoting “Limited Edition 30”.
- UV printing for the smooth rainbow arc and other fine graphical details.
- Rubber clutch attachments for comfortable wear.
- PVC bubble bag packaging to protect each pin individually.
The final artwork was a complex composition, featuring not only a foreground of elemental figures, but also layers of cityscape, crystals, water swirls, and symbolic architecture.
Design and Engineering Breakdown
The pin measured approximately 74.9mm tall, making it larger than standard lapel pins and necessitating precision in mold cutting and assembly.
- Bottom Layer: Featured a detailed futuristic city skyline and the full arched rainbow. UV printing was used here to maintain the smooth gradient transitions of the rainbow, impossible to replicate with enamel alone.
- Middle Layer: The flame character stands centerstage, surrounded by colorful geometric crystals. This layer involved detailed metal linework to define clothing textures and character expressions.
- Top Layer: Showcases the water character, complete with translucent water swirls. The layered placement makes it appear as though they’re rising up from the base, interacting with the fire element above.
Crafting Process
From file preparation to final inspection, the pin went through over a dozen precise production steps:
Mold Engraving: Based on the vector design, CNC machines engraved molds for each layer with high-definition detail. Separate dies were created for each pin segment to ensure accurate assembly later.
Die Striking & Layer Cutting: Using high-tonnage presses, each metal blank was struck, cut, and deburred. Internal cutouts and curves were carefully machined to maintain character outlines.
Polishing & Wet Grinding: As noted in production emails, the pin layers underwent wet grinding—a smoothing process used to refine intricate surfaces before enamel filling.
Enamel Filling: Technicians manually filled each recessed area with Pantone-matched enamel, baking each layer individually to harden and bond the color. This multi-step process ensures that colors remain vibrant and chip-resistant.
UV Printing: The rainbow arc and certain facial details were applied via UV print to retain their softness and clarity—something traditional enamel would struggle to maintain due to physical separation by metal lines.
Layer Assembly: The three layers were then carefully aligned and affixed using reinforced back posts. This pin-on-pin technique gave the product its visual depth.
Plating & Backstamp: Each pin was plated with black nickel, chosen for its sleek, high-contrast finish. The reverse was stamped with a “Limited Edition 30” mark.
Quality Control: Our team performed a full QC inspection, checking each unit for uniformity, surface smoothness, plating consistency, and alignment.

The client remained involved from start to finish, offering feedback and approving key milestones. One memorable moment came during QC:

They were especially concerned about the integrity of the UV rainbow and the proper alignment of each layer. Frequent progress updates and sample photos helped ease concerns and ensured we delivered exactly what was expected.
