Client Requirements

The client sought:

  • A fairytale-inspired character pin that appeals to collectors
  • Hard enamel finish for a smooth, high-gloss surface
  • Multiple skin and costume tones to promote inclusivity
  • Polished metal lines to define facial and costume features
  • Laser engraved back stamp for authenticity

“We wanted a timeless design with diverse visual expressions—this set turned out exactly as we envisioned.”
— Our client

Crafting Process

1. Mold & Base Metal

Each pin was die-struck using precision-cut molds. Zinc alloy was chosen for its ability to retain detail while providing strength, especially important for the pin’s larger 3” size.

2. Color Filling with Hard Enamel

Hard enamel (also known as imitation cloisonné) was used for its durability and luxury finish. The enamel was baked and then hand-polished, resulting in a flat, smooth surface—unlike soft enamel pins which maintain texture and relief.

3. Variant Finishes

Each colorway used a different metal plating:

  • Gold Metal Finish (Variants A & B)
  • Black Nickel Finish (Variant C)

Special effects included transparent sandblast fill, pearl and glitter enamels, and laser engraving on the reverse side.

4. Silkscreen Printing

Small facial details and highlights were printed using silkscreen methods for clarity, especially in areas like the eyes, lace accents, and shadows.

Client Interaction Highlights

Throughout the development, the client requested revisions to ensure character authenticity and skin tone representation. Each design underwent digital proofing with Pantone-matched colors to ensure vibrancy and accuracy.

“The turnaround time and enamel quality exceeded expectations.”
— Our client shared after receiving the first production batch.

Production Workflow

  1. Design Approval: Client reviewed digital mockups with plating and color breakdowns.
  2. Mold Creation: CNC-milled die molds ensured accuracy and fine detail.
  3. Color Testing: Multiple shades of pearl, glitter, and translucent enamel were evaluated before final approval.
  4. Batch Production: Pins were cast, polished, plated, filled, baked, polished again, and finally printed.
  5. Laser Back Engraving: Every pin was marked with the brand emblem and unique SKU.

Post-Production & Quality Control

Each piece was visually inspected for:

  • Color uniformity
  • Enamel smoothness
  • Polishing quality
  • Pin post strength (double rubber clutch ensured balance on garments)

Pins were then packed in individual PVC bags with bubble wrap to prevent surface scratching during transit.

FAQs – About Hard Enamel Pins

Q: What’s the difference between hard enamel and soft enamel?
A: Hard enamel pins have a smooth, polished finish—colors are filled to the same level as the metal lines. Soft enamel leaves a raised metal surface and recessed colored areas.

Q: How durable are hard enamel pins?
A: Extremely durable! They’re scratch-resistant, waterproof, and designed to last for years without fading—ideal for high-end collector items or frequent wear.

Q: Can I request multiple color variants like this case?
A: Absolutely. As long as the mold remains the same, you can customize metal finishes, enamel colors, and back engravings to diversify your product line.

Q: Do you offer laser engraving on the back?
A: Yes! Laser-engraved logos or serial numbers are a great way to reinforce brand identity and authenticity.

Pin Details

Below are some details for the project:

  1. Design Details: A gold metal base with bold enamel colors: white, black, Pantone 123, Pantone 7420, and Pantone 7714. The design featured Christian symbols, including a chalice, grapes, and wheat, surrounded by the text “Corpus Christi.”
  2. Style: Hard enamel lapel pin
  3. Size: 26×26mm.
  4. Plating: Gold
  5. Backside: Custom backstamp
  6. Accessory: A gold butterfly clutch for easy use.
  7. Durability: The pins were to be 1.5mm thick, ensuring robustness without compromising aesthetics.
  8. Packaging: Standard polybags for secure and economical packaging.

Crafting Process

  1. Design Finalization:
The process began with an initial design provided by the client. The client sent the initial details with some details and needs. Our team reviewed these details to ensure clarity and accurate color placement. Key elements like the chalice’s golden shimmer and the subtle texture of the grapes required careful planning to reflect the original design’s intent. Size, plating and other details also need to be clearly marked in the artwork. Finally, the client approved the artwork for the production.
  2. Mold:
A custom mold was created to match the 26×26mm dimensions, ensuring sharp edges and high-fidelity detail reproduction. This step laid the foundation for a precise representation of the intricate imagery.
  3. Enamel Application:
Hard enamel colors were carefully filled into the recessed areas of the metal base.
  4. Wet Grinding & Polishing:
After the enamel was set, wet grinding made the metal lines on the pin visible and polishing could make a smooth surface.
  5. Metal Plating:
The lapel pins were plated with a gold finish, adding an elegant base that highlighted the religious design elements. The gold plating was meticulously polished to enhance its reflective quality.
  6. Quality Checks: Each pin was inspected for enamel uniformity, color accuracy, and flawless plating.
  7. Packaging: Once approved, the pins were individually packed in standard polybags to protect them during transit.

Post-Production Results

The completed lapel pins exceeded client expectations, as evidenced by their positive feedback. The vibrant colors, particularly the Pantone 7420 and Pantone 7714, were striking and aligned perfectly with the client’s vision. Additionally, the gold plating added a premium feel to the final product. The pins’ durability was a standout feature, thanks to the 1.5mm thickness and hard enamel finish.

The client expressed satisfaction with both the process and the final product:
