Why Choose Pin-on-Pin?

Pin-on-pin construction combines two or more separately made pin pieces into one layered design, creating real physical depth and a more dimensional appearance. By raising selected elements above the base pin, this technique adds stronger visual hierarchy, richer detail, and more creative possibilities than a traditional single-layer pin.

  • Real Layered Dimension

Creates genuine physical depth by placing one pin element above another.

  • Stronger Visual Focus

Raised elements naturally draw attention to important characters, logos, symbols, or design details.

  • Creative Layered Compositions

Build foreground and background elements separately to create more dynamic and detailed artwork.

  • Flexible Design Combinations

Customize the shape, size, position, and arrangement of each layer to suit your concept.

  • Mix Multiple Finishes

Combine different enamel colors, metal finishes, printing, glitter, or other effects across separate layers.

  • Perfect for Collectibles

Ideal for character pins, detailed artwork, commemorative designs, limited editions, merchandise, and special releases.

Pins FAQ

Plan raised layers, rivet connections and independent finishes for your custom Pin-on-Pin design.

How does Pin-on-Pin differ from 3D Metal Relief?

Pin-on-Pin stacks separately made metal components to create distinct raised layers. 3D Metal Relief creates sculpted height changes within a single metal body.

How are the layers attached, and can they move?

We rivet the upper components to the base for a fixed layered construction. If your design needs rotation, sliding or another movement, it requires a separate mechanism.

How many layers can a Pin-on-Pin design have?

Two layers are standard, while three or four can be made depending on the design. Additional layers need a review of total thickness, weight and assembly space.

How much overlap do the raised pieces need?

Each raised piece needs enough overlap and space for secure riveting. We review narrow sections, unsupported overhangs and layer spacing at the intended finished size.

Can each layer have different colors and finishes?

Zinc-alloy components can use different plating, enamel colors, printing and special effects. Hard, soft and 3D enamel options can be planned separately for each layer.

How are backing positions chosen for a layered pin?

Backings are placed on the base to support the assembled pin. Their number and position account for weight, balance and clearance from the rivets and back details.

Does each layer need its own tooling?

Each separately made component needs its own tooling. Producing and riveting multiple parts increases cost and lead time; the quote confirms both for your design.

How is the assembled Pin-on-Pin connection checked?

We use a strong pull test to check connection security and inspect alignment, spacing and balance. Avoid bending or pulling the raised pieces during normal use.
